WNAT pupils take art at Holkham
Budding artists from two WNAT schools drew inspiration from a visit to historic Holkham Hall, where they created landscape paintings of the grounds of the 18th-century stately home in the style of painters John Constable and JMW Turner.
Year 3 classes from Clenchwarton Primary School and West Lynn Primary School, enjoyed a trip to the ancient seat of the Coke family, which is now owned by the eighth Earl of Leicester and includes farmland, woodland, an extensive deer park, a walled garden, salt marsh, pine forests, and a beach with sand dunes, as well as the Holkham National Nature Reserve with its abundant wildlife.
Twenty-nine children from Clenchwarton and 25 from West Lynn enjoyed a tractor trip around the estate, before exploring the walled garden. They then had the opportunity to paint a Holkham landscape using watercolour paints.
“The trip supported our art curriculum about landscapes, as the children had been looking at Constable and Turner,” explained Sophy Tarsey, the Year 3 Teacher at Clenchwarton who accompanied the group.
“Highlights included seeing the hall and the wildlife in the grounds, painting landscapes, and a tractor ride.”
It was the first time that Clenchwarton had visited Holkham Hall, and the second year running for West Lynn.
“The visit linked into our Art curriculum in Autumn 1 Term, about landscapes and famous artists like Constable and Turner,” added Mrs Tarsey, who was joined on the day by West Lynn Year 3 Teacher Matt Smith, and class teaching assistants from both schools.
“Events like this are so important to enrich the curriculum and allow all children to experience trips.”
