At Springwood High School this year’s results were the highest in the school’s history on every measure.

Some 71 per cent of students gained a 4 or higher in English and Maths, up 14 per cent from last year, while 47 per centre of students gained a 5 or higher in English and Maths, up 8 per cent from last year, and 13 per cent of students gained a 7 or higher in English and Maths, up 2 per cent from last year.

“I am so proud of the students and staff at Springwood,” Executive Headteacher Andy Johnson said: “This is a phenomenal achievement for the school following a huge amount of hard work from everyone at the school.”

Springwood also celebrated its highest results in Science GCSE where 80 per cent of students gained a 4 or higher in GCSE Science, up 10 per cent from last year.

In addition, 61 per cent of students gained a 5 or higher in GCSE Science, up 10% from last year, and 22 per cent of students gained a 7 or higher in GCSE Science, up 6 per cent from last year.

A third of Springwood students also took Triple Science with 16 per cent achieving a grade 9 in Physics, up 8 per cent from last year, alongside an improvement in both Biology and Chemistry results.

“Springwood has strategically placed student’s academic achievement at the heart of what we do,” added Roger Livesey, Chair of the Trustees and Springwood Governing Body. “These results show that this strategy is working extremely well. Well done to everyone involved.”

Springwood also had record results in other subjects across the board.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what the students have achieved,” said Head of Year 11 Rebecca Davies-Mays. “Today is definitely a day of celebration, not only for academic success but all the extra-curricular successes they have had along the way.

“Academic progress has always been at the heart of what we do at Springwood, but the extra-curricular activities and getting involved is what makes for a great five years as a Springwood student.

“I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to guide and support this group of talented young people through their time at Springwood and wish them all the best for their future endeavours.”

With so many successful results across the ability range at Smithdon High School, Headteacher Amanda Gibbins was pleased to share the students’ joy as they opened their envelopes.

"Results day is the culmination of all students’ time at Smithdon and is one of my favourite days of the year," she said. "Having the privilege to be a part of the students’ excitement as they prepare to go on to their next steps is just amazing.”

Steve Chapman, Assistant Headteacher Curriculum, added: “Year 11’s approach to the exams this year was outstanding and the students’ results reflect the hard work and focussed determination shown throughout their studies.”

Andy Gee, chair of the school governors, said: “This has been another fantastic year for Smithdon and Year 11. To see so many happy faces is always a pleasure.”

At Marshland High School, Headteacher Craig Jansen said students did very well within their academic subjects of Maths, English, Science, History, and Geography.

He continued: “Our students have once again performed to a high standard across the subjects they have studied. In many instances, our students have achieved above their predictions.

“We have a strong focus on supporting all our students to achieve highly ensuring they are able to successfully transition into post-16 education.

"We are equally delighted with the superb outcomes achieved by our students within our other suite of GCSEs – for example, Film Studies, 3D Design, Art, Photography, to name but a few.”

Steve Cozens, Chair of Governors, added: “Our governors are incredibly proud of the results achieved by our students, supported by our staff.

"I wish all our students the very best with the next stage of their education.”

The Year 11 cohort St Clement’s High School excelled in all subjects, including the Arts.

"It’s brilliant to see everyone’s hard work paying off," said Headteacher Nigel Willingham. "We’re very proud of our students and their families who worked so hard to support them.

"Alongside our great results in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, we have seen outstanding results in the Arts subjects, such as Drama and Fine Art.

"In Photography 100% of students achieved grades four to nine, and it’s wonderful to see the Arts subjects flourishing in our school at a time when these subjects are under pressure nationally."

Students also did very well in languages, with more than two thirds of St Clement's French students achieving a grade of 4 to 9.

Mr Willingham continued: “The students engaged with the high level of support provided in Languages and they have been rewarded with a great set of results.”

Among those celebrating top grades at Springwood were Eva Kalabina (eight grade 9s, A in additional maths, two grade 8s and one grade 7), and Kevin Monk (seven grade 9s, two grade 8s, one grade 7).

Eva, who is staying on at Springwood to study Economics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths at A-Level, said: “I didn’t have a very good night's sleep because I was stressing quite a bit about my results, but I’m over the moon with these results.

“I was hoping for as many 9s as possible but, despite doing well in my Mocks, I wasn’t confident in myself, so when predicting my results, I predicted more 8s.

“I was most pleased with my A in Additional Maths, because I was worried about this one, and, overall, I feel like my hard work has paid off.

“I think people talk a lot about talent or natural ability, but working hard is what fulfils learning for me. I feel like I’m quite an academic person, so to know that my hard work has led to really good results is really satisfying.”

She has ambitions to study Economics or Maths at Cambridge and added: “I’m pleased to be taking my A Levels here because it’s been great at Springwood. 

"All the teachers have always been supportive of me. Even before GCSEs started, in years 7, 8 and 9, they were always happy to help me.”

Kevin is also staying on at Springwood to study Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics at A Level with the aim of going to Imperial College to study Electrical Engineering.

“I was a bit stressed coming in to collect my results,” he said. “I was hoping for all 8s. I really wasn’t expecting any 9s, so to get seven is incredible.

“I’m most pleased with the 9s in English Literature and Computer Science as I found both of them quite hard, and I really wasn’t expecting to get these results. But I did spend a lot of time revising, and it shows you the hard work pays off.”

Meanwhile Zion Noble (six grade 9s, one Grade D2, one grade 8, two grade 7s), Oliver Oliveira (five grade 9s, A in additional Maths, three grade 8s, three grade 7s), and Pavel Croitoru (five grade 9s, A in additional Maths, two grade 8s, two grade 7s, two grade 6s) were also amongst Springwood’s top achievers.

Zion, who is staying on at Springwood to study Chemistry, Psychology and English Literature at A Level, said: “I was so nervous coming in today. I wanted to get all 7s and above, but I wasn’t sure I’d get that so I was really happy to see so many nines.

“I was actually most proud of my 7 in Maths because I really didn’t think I’d get that.”

She added: “I came here at the start of Year 10, and it’s been a really positive experience at Springwood. The teachers are great and now I’m hoping they can help me get into university where I hope to study Law.”

Oliver is also staying on at Springwood to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level with a view to then studying Engineering at University.

“I’m speechless. I really wasn’t expecting to do as well as I have,” he said. “I just feel so proud because I put so many hours into every single day prior to the exams and it’s really paid off.

“I’m most pleased with my A in Additional Maths because it was the last GCSE, I was really tired, and I felt it was the hardest exam of them all.”

He added: “It’s been amazing at Springwood. All the teachers are really nice and I’ve made loads of friends, it’s a very welcoming school community.”

Some excellent individual successes were celebrated at Smithdon by Kenzie Kellingray, Amy Dade and Summer Doughty-Bingham. Meanwhile Head Students Izzy Mears and Isaac Minns were in the top six of Smithdon's best results. 

Isaac’s results included two 8s and one 9 in History while Izzy’s included three 6s, two 8s and a Level 2 Distinction*. 

“I was a bit nervous coming in to collect my results today, but I felt that I was going to be alright,” said Isaac, who hopes to take up an apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering. “I’m very happy with my results.”

Mia Jackson achieved Smithdon's best results, including five 8s and a Level 2 Distinction in Health and Social Care, followed by Mia Rodrigues, whose achievements included two 8s, a 9 in RE and a Level 2 Distinction in Health and Social Care.

“I did better than expected,” said Mia Jackson, who is off to Springwood Sixth Form to study Biology, Psychology and Maths at A Level.

Mia Rodrigues is still deciding what she wants to do next. “Smithdon has been a great space for me to grow as a person,” she said. “The teachers adapted their teaching to how you learn best.”

Among the high fliers at St Clement’s were Oliver Wright and Holly McGowan.

Sam Bailey, Head of Year 11, said: “Many students have gained multiple top grades and surpassed their target grades, but particular mention must go to Oliver and Holly as our highest performers.

“Holly is now in a strong position to fulfil her ambition of becoming a doctor, and Oliver will progress with his aim to to pursue a career in the field of Maths of Science.”
